2014

THISTLE & BURR

Riesling

Our 2014 Riesling is a unique opportunity to taste a Riesling with 7 years age, we crafted this wine to last. With most Riesling consumed within a year, most miss out on the opportunity to experience the depth of flavour that can come with patience.
Long and intense citrus flavours that are clean and refreshing are combined with rose petal and orange blossom aromas. This crisp dry Riesling is crafted to be enjoyed now or aged and savoured in the future.
Our winemaker Jo Irvine has skilfully crafted our Riesling to be an example of the very best that the Eden Valley can offer. Our fruit is handled very delicately from vineyard to winery to ensure a clean and true fruit flavour.
Our “Thistle & Burr” Riesling is named after our pioneering ancestor Heinrich Fiebiger and the many roles he undertook after settling in the region in 1861.

The Vineyard

Our “Thistle & Burr” Riesling is made from our estate grown single site vineyard in Keyneton, part of the Eden Valley wine region. The vines were planted over 40 years ago in an area of sandy loam soil over gravel with bedrock and clay patches. The Eden Valley is renowned for producing outstanding Riesling, arguably the best in Australia, with exceptional potential for aging.

Background

We have named our wines after our ancestor Heinrich Fiebiger, and the many roles he undertook in the formative years of settlement in the region. Our “Thistle & Burr” Riesling is named after his position in 1873 of Thistle & Burr Inspector. Our family have remained in Keyneton, part of the Eden Valley wine region for over 150 years.

The Vintage

The 2014 vintage was harvested on March, after heatwaves in January and early February were followed by heavy rain falls in late February, thankfully giving the vines a much needed rest. Our vineyard was lucky to be kept safely away from the devastating Eden Valley fires that effected the region. The late season produced low yields after windy conditions during flowering. We were careful to hand-pick our Riesling to protect the delicate berries and ensure the purest fruit flavour.

Our Winemaking

Our winemaker Jo Irvine is renowned for her skills in making Riesling, even winning an international Riesling challenge. Her finesse and skill in making our Riesling ensures it is clean and pure in flavour, with the right acid balance. Our fruit is handled very delicately through each stage, including no skin contact before crushing and pressing and cool slow in-tank fermentation. Our Riesling is bottled within 6 weeks of harvest to capture aromatics.

Food Pairing

One of our  favourite dishes to enjoy with our 2014 Riesling has to be a generous serve of  Fettucine Marinara. With prawns & mussels fresh from the waters of South Australia, a squeeze of lemon juice topped with fresh herbs from the garden its perfect match!
