VERTICAL TASTING

Riesling 3 Pack

A unique opportunity to compare how the seasons change and affect the flavour of wine. Our Vertical Tasting Riesling 3 Pack includes our 2015, 2018 and 2021 vintages.
The 2015 and 2018 allow you to compare traditional characteristics of Riesling from the Eden Valley, as the vintage conditions from these years were typical. Comparing these 2 vintages allows you the unique opportunity to taste how Riesling ages, and why we believe more people should take the time to enjoy aged Rieslings.
Our 2021 Riesling is a classic example of the stunning lime flavours that the Eden Valley is world renowned for. Our single site estate grown vineyard with ancient sandy loam soils over areas of bedrock and clay provide the perfect conditions for Riesling grapes to develop in.
Our winemaker Jo Irvine has skilfully crafted our Riesling to be an example of the very best that the Eden Valley can offer.

The Vineyard

Our “Thistle & Burr” Riesling is made from our estate grown single site vineyard in Keyneton, part of the Eden Valley wine region. The vines were planted over 40 years ago in an area of sandy loam soil over gravel with bedrock and clay patches. The Eden Valley is renowned for producing outstanding Riesling, arguably the best in Australia, with exceptional potential for aging.

Background

We have named our wines after our ancestor Heinrich Fiebiger, and the many roles he undertook in the formative years of settlement in the region. Our “Thistle & Burr” Riesling is named after his position in 1873 of Thistle & Burr Inspector. Our family have remained in Keyneton, part of the Eden Valley wine region for over 150 years.

The Vintage

This is an outstanding opportunity to compare how the seasons effect the same vineyard and fruit that makes the wine. The 2013, 2015 and 2018 vintages are comparable for their typical slow ripening conditions for the Eden Valley region. Comparing these vintages allows you to explore how Riesling ages and develops its luscious full bodied mouth feel and depth of flavour.

The 2013 vintage was harvested on 25th February, after a dry growing season with late finishing rain fall. A cool January was followed by a warm February. This vintage produced low yield, yet intense fruit flavour. We were careful to hand-pick our Riesling to protect the delicate berries once their varietal flavours had developed. Although the season was dry our vines benefited from the extra love and care we gave them with this vintage being our first for Kyara.
The 2015 & 2018 vintage was harvested in February, after conditions which provided a classic Riesling growing season. A wet winter was followed by a mild spring and summer which provided perfect ripening for our fruit. We were careful to hand-pick our Riesling to protect the delicate berries and ensure the purest fruit flavour. Our Riesling vineyard also benefited from areas being mulched prior year to help maintain and develop soil health.

Our Winemaking

Our winemaker Jo Irvine is renowned for her skills in making Riesling, even winning an international Riesling challenge. Her finesse and skill in making our Riesling ensures it is clean and pure in flavour, with the right acid balance. Our fruit is handled delicately with no skin contact before crushing and pressing. After cool slow in-tank fermentation the wine is bottled within 6 weeks of harvest to capture aromatics. Our Riesling has been made for exceptional aging potential.
